Portable, or wireless, computing
has been a factor within industrial and warehousing environments
for over twenty years. The original terminals operated via fixed
frequencies, regulated by governmental authorities, and were
often fixed to forklift trucks, manriders, etc. Nowadays, the
radio frequency rules are more liberal, and users have rapidly
moved from narrow-band to spread-spectrum technology. What has
remained, however, is the demand for rugged portable terminals
able to withstand the hard knocks and low temperatures, associated
with the harsh environment of the warehouse or factory, and
the demand for scanning technology able to work at a fast pace
or over long scanning distances.
